Regulators Grapple with Regulation of AI

Regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) is a growing concern for global regulators due to issues such as algorithmic bias, misinformation, and data misuse.

In contrast, the United States is adopting a more cautious approach, utilizing existing regulatory frameworks and focusing on balancing AI’s benefits with its risks. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has begun investigating ChatGPT, and an executive order from the Biden administration requires disclosure of capabilities for dual-use (military and civilian) AI systems.

Big tech companies generally support regulation to avoid backlash but are wary of stringent rules that may stifle innovation or entrench market leaders. Industry standards and best practices are being developed, including initiatives by the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) in the U.S. However, concerns persist about the unchecked growth of AI startups, leading to calls for more comprehensive regulations to ensure safety and prevent potential existential threats.
